The new, generic version of Viagra, the world’s best-known erectile dysfunction drug, will be marketed to men with ED and a lower risk of heart attack and stroke.
“We believe that men with ED can feel their best and most satisfying sexual life,” said Dr. Mark C. Henry, the head of drug strategy at Pfizer Inc.’s drugmaker, which makes Viagra, and co-CEO William Surowitz said in a statement.
Viagra was Pfizer’s first-ever drug to sell for erectile dysfunction, the drug’s active ingredient, sildenafil citrate. Viagra can help men get and keep an erection, but men who have a weak or blocked erection might not be able to get it, said C. J. Haddox, vice president of marketing and sales at Pfizer. Viagra helps men with erectile dysfunction with a blood flow to the penis, he said.
Viagra sales reached $1 billion last year, with sales reaching $2.5 billion in the U. S., the company said.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) has just approved a deal with rival CVS Corp. to sell Cialis, the world’s best-selling erectile dysfunction drug, to distributors in the U. S. The drugmaker, which makes the brand name Viagra, said the deal would bring the amount of money it would earn from selling Viagra to consumers in the U. to as much as $1 billion each.CVS and its distributor will receive a share of the profits, Pfizer said. But the company said sales would be limited to about $300 million a year. Pfizer said it was considering a lower price for Viagra, but the drugmaker said it could not be certain how much it will receive from the sale.
“There’s been some criticism of the way that CVS has marketed products and the way it has marketed products,” Henry said in a statement.
The drug maker Pfizer has long sought FDA approval for its erectile dysfunction drug Cialis, but has found it difficult to find a generic equivalent.
Pfizer has been forced to pull a generic version of the drug, called tadalafil, from its U. S. pharmacy in September after a lab test showed it had been linked to up to four of the drug’s 100 impotence drugs.
The company has also been forced to recall Cialis’ generic equivalent, Cialis, after a lab test that showed it increased blood flow to the penis by up to twofold, compared to the drug’s U. equivalent, tadalafil, in March.
Cialis, which is the active ingredient in Viagra, is one of three erectile dysfunction drugs that Pfizer has taken to market, while tadalafil is the other drug.
